How to automatically generate a response for a new email in Gmail using AI

Relay.app is an automation tool that lets you automate actions across Gmail, OpenAI, and many other apps. In this guide, we'll show you how to automatically run the “prompt GPT-3.5” action in OpenAI for each email received in Gmail using Relay.app.

1

Set the Gmail trigger as “Email received”

A playbook always starts with a trigger, which is responsible for detecting changes in your connected applications and responding accordingly.

Add the Gmail trigger to initiate your playbook's actions every time an email is received. Click "Add trigger" in your playbook and choose "Email received" from the dropdown menu under Gmail.

If you still need to connect your Gmail account to Relay.app yet, a prompt will guide you through the process.

2

Add the “Prompt GPT-3.5” step in OpenAI

Integrate OpenAI's automation into your playbook to ensure prompt responses for every email received in Gmail.

Click the "Add step" button, locate the “Prompt GPT-3.5” automation for OpenAI, and input the mandatory and relevant details.

If your OpenAI account still needs to be connected to Relay.app, you will be prompted to complete that connection. Make sure to allow the necessary permissions for Relay.app to sync with your OpenAI account.

3

Activate your playbook

Activating your playbook is the last step in the process. Once you turn it on, it will automatically generate a response for the email every time an email is received in Gmail without requiring manual intervention.

To activate your playbook, click the toggle button at the header. Before activating, we recommend performing a test run of your playbook to ensure all the steps work seamlessly together.
